Structure interactions in a reduced-order model for wall-bounded turbulence

نویسندگان

چکیده

Reduced-order models are derived for a simplified description of transition and turbulence in Waleffe Couette flow. Twelve nonlinear ordinary differential equations model the dynamics coherent structures fair agreement with direct numerical simulation. Compared to previous models, these low order systems display longer lifetimes lower thresholds. Two spanwise wavelengths, ${L}_{z}$ ${L}_{z}/2$, roll streak modes is key feature. The show that interaction between either wavelength crucial maintain lifetimes, as neglect such leads order-of-magnitude lifetime reductions.

Coherent structures in wall-bounded turbulence.

The inherent difficulty of understanding turbulence has led to researchers attacking the topic in many different ways over the years of turbulence research. Some approaches have been more successful than others, but most only deal with part of the problem. One approach that has seen reasonable success (or at least popularity) is that of attempting to deconstruct the complex and disorganised tur...

The logarithmic region of wall turbulence: Universality, structure and interactions

The logarithmic region, also referred to as the inertial subrange in physical space, or the turbulent wall region, is arguably the most important region of wall-bounded turbulent flows due to the multi-scale processes that take place. In this paper we review recent studies that report on the universality of this region in terms of the scaling laws for the mean velocities and turbulence intensit...

Phenomenology of wall-bounded Newtonian turbulence.

We construct a simple analytic model for wall-bounded turbulence, containing only four adjustable parameters. Two of these parameters are responsible for the viscous dissipation of the components of the Reynolds stress tensor. The other two parameters control the nonlinear relaxation of these objects. The model offers an analytic description of the profiles of the mean velocity and the correlat...
